Willow oak / Quercus phellos

Willow oak / Quercus phellos

Willow oak is found naturally in the central and eastern United States. There, the tree grows along rivers, on soils that are usually flooded in winter. There are also occasional brief wet periods during the growing season. Willow oak often grows on the wet-dry soil interface in the neighborhood of Red Maple, Pennsylvania Ash, and Gladicia threespine. This oak can reach up to thirty meters in height. In an artificial environment, the tree grows to fifteen to twenty meters tall and up to twelve meters wide. At a young age, the willow oak has a fairly fast-growing pyramidal crown, which at a more mature age acquires a broad ovoid shape. The Willow Oak is a combination of the graceful silhouette of the willow and the majestic character of the oak. This tree has the crown and slender, tall trunk of an oak, but it does not have the typical oak's lobed leaves. Its beautiful, conspicuous leaves are lanceolate, quite like those of the willow. At budding, the shiny, wavy foliage is bronze-colored, then turns green, and then turns a beautiful golden yellow in the fall. The variety retains its foliage in warmer climates and sheds it in colder conditions. In May, the willow oak blooms with dangling golden-yellow colored flowers. After flowering, brown and golden yellow acorns appear on the tree, which birds and small mammals love to eat. The willow oak is suitable for planting in urban areas and is a good investment for the future. It tolerates wind (including moderate sea winds), drought, heat and short-term flooding well. This makes it suitable for use in coastal areas and damp locations. This tree does well in parks, (large) gardens and cemeteries. The willow oak is not susceptible to diseases, but requires acidic soil. The tree does not grow well in lime-rich soils.
